Time Trials

Time trials are a great introduction to bike racing. There are 1000's of events that take place each year with the racing season usually running from February to late September - although there are events all year round if you are really keen!

To get involved usually involves just turning up and paying a small fee for club events, and for open events an entry form needs to be submitted to the organiser in advance. It doesn't matter what type of bike you use, you don't need to spend a lot of money and can start time trialling on a mountain bike.

Club events are informal and usually take place on week nights during the summer. You can just turn up and pay a small fee (£1 or £2) and ride. Open events are more formal and you need to entry in advance, there is prize money on offer for the winner and sometimes category awards.

Open Events
The organisation called "Cycling Time Trials" is the national body that governs time trialling in England and Wales. They are responsible for co-ordinating the information about open events that take place throughout the season. If you want to enter an open event the process is to download an entry form from the CTT website, complete and send with the entry fee to the event organiser.

For administration purposes the country is spilt into "districts" based on geographic location. Sheffrec is in the North Midland district, but this doesn't restrict you to only riding events in our district. The majority of open events are available to all riders.

Details on races can be found on the CTT website and you are able to search by district, distance, date etc. The other way to find out about open events is to buy the CTT 2010 handbook which lists the addresses of all the events organisers. Sheffrec has a copy of the CTT handbook as do several members, so if you need to find out about a race all you need to do is ask.

This is the home page for the CTT website

List of open events taking place during 2010

Any of the events taking place in the North Midlands district (known as the "O" district as all the course codes have an O prefix) will be within an hours travelling distance of Sheffield. The events in the Central district (A courses), Lincolnshire district (C courses), Manchester district (J) and Yorkshire (V courses) are also fairly close.

In 2010 Sheffrec are organising 3 open time trials. An early season team time trial (2-up), and 10 mile time trial in May and a 25 mile time trial in July.

80th Monsal Hillclimb - Sunday October 10th, 11.00am

This year is the 80th running of the famous Monsal Hillclimb. The event is one of the most prestigious hillclimbs in Derbyshire. Monsal Head is a famous beauty spot with a magnificent view down Monsal Dale and up the Wye valley. The picturesque setting of Monsal Dale attracts a large crowd, even on an October Sunday morning. The event, first run in 1930 attracts riders from local club level to seasoned professionals. Past winners include Tom Simson, Malcolm Elliott and more recently Russell Downing, Dean Downing and Adam Blythe.

Past organisers have made this event a part of the local event calendar for many years, Ike Delbridge who was one of the original riders from the first event organised for 25 years, passing over the reins to Albert Thorpe who continued to organise for 27 years. Albert then handed the job of organiser to his son, David. David, who was also a former rider of the Monsal Hill Climb kept the event in the Thorpe family name and in honour of his father for 14 years. 2008 saw a few changes for David and the 2009 event was run by Marc Etches, Secretary of Sheffrec Cycling Club and also a Monsal Hill Climb rider. 2009 was a record entry with 106 riders.

Event Start: 11:00am
Distance: HC
Event Type: Solo
Course: OHC3
Closing Date: 1/10/2010
Fee: £6.00 - cheques payable to Sheffrec CC.
